MATERIALITY IN MOTION
Materiality in Motion is a collaborative installation performance created by myself and artist Lucy Boermans. It examines the transition between material states and extends this shift into the audio domain.
A receptacle is filled with cold honey which is then gradually heated to boiling point. As the honey turns from solid to liquid, colour and motion across the surface is tracked via camera and translated into a fluctuating soundscape – gradually building in textural and harmonic intensity and the honey begins
to bubble.
These physical elements are accompanied by a large scale video installation showing the same heating and cooling process rendered at different time-scales. Here, too, motion tracking is employed – measuring the number of people who gather near the video installation and using this data to dynamically drive sound and music.
